My problem started that way--just a little fuel on the windshield when starting
up. Then it gradually got worse, bit by bit, until the fuel finally blew the
top off my glass enclosed fuel gauge. Folks here on Ercoupe tech recommended
installing a new fuel restrictor valve (it's the fitting coming off the fuel
pump line that goes to the header tank). It limits the fuel flow to the header
tank just in excess of that needed for max cruise and the opening tends to
enlarge over time causing more fuel to enter the header than it can return to
the main tank. If the new restrictor (available from Skyport for $34.50)
doesn't do the job then the problem is most likely a blockage in the fuel
return line and it's time to buy some pipe cleaners. I cured my problem with
the new restrictor fitting just the other day.
