This makes absolutely no sense. Why would one limit the technical
content when replying to a technical e-mail list but not when replying
to the individual? If there's something technical to say, surely the
group is worthy of hearing it!
Now, the editorial content:
In my day I have been a member of many e-mail lists. With one exception
(this one) all have had the default reply address st to the forum. It
is, after all, a forum, not a place to initiate private conversations.
Today this (these 2) are the only e-mail lists left that I participate
in. Having replies default to the individual, IMHO, defeats the purpose
of having a forum and being a member.
Over the years, one by one, all the other lists have been replaced by
web based forums. Inevitably, every time it happens, there are a few
who must be dragged kicking and screaming into the brave new world, and
inevitably there are a couple who refuse to make the transition, but in
the long run it always is an improvement.
