On page 5B of today's (July 2, 2010) edition of USA Today under the "Drive On" article by Chris Woodyard "With only 20 hours of flying time, you too could become licensed to fly the Terrafugia, the flying car. Terrafugia has recieved an exemption from the FAA to be classified as a "light sport aircraft," even though it is 110 pounds over the take off weight limit for the classification."
I don't know how FAA can resist a similar exemption for all aircraft up to 1430lbs which otherwise meet the requirements if challenged in court. I would think a substantial number of Ercoupe Owners Club members whose planes have a certificated weight over 1320 but below 1430 would readily sponsor the club filing suit on their behalf in light of the favor done for Terrafugia.
