Hello,

Appologies to good beta testers John and Adam with problems they encountered
with the first beta of the ECW ArcGIS 8.1 plug-in and Arc/Info 8.0.2. As the
developer of the plug-in I would like to add my comments\information to this
issue.

It was unfortunate that problems were encountered with Arc/Info 8.0.2 and
the ECW ArcGIS 8.1 plug-in but the initial email sent with the plug-in did
state the warning:

>> Note that this plug-in is intended for ArcGIS 8.1, previous versions of
ArcGIS are not supported.

However, since I never had Arc/Info 8.0.2 during testing and development I
was unable to predict the results. In hindsight I should have stated:

"Note that this plug-in is intended for ArcGIS 8.1, previous versions of
ArcGIS are not supported or might cause a reinstallation of Arc/Info 8.0.2
if plug-in is installed."

However, the installation was clever enough to create a "install_info.txt"
(but not clever enough to detect Arc/Info 8.0.2 and bomb out) in the user
chosen directory to indicate steps taken by the installation (left behind on
uninstall).

>>The readme.txt and Install_Info.txt file in this directory also contain
additional information.

This file might have helped to restore Arc/Info 8.0.2 to previous state. It
might be as simple as restoring the deleted file "RasterFormats.cfg" from
".\ecw_backup" to D:\arcgis\arcexe81\Raster\devices\ntx86\win32_nt, eg:

<snip>
3) Copy and Backup raster scripts "Filefilters.cfg" and "RasterFormats.cfg"
   to "Filefilters.cfg.bak" and "RasterFormats.cfg.bak" in ".\ecw_backup"
directory.
   Append the following lines to Filefilters.cfg:
D:\arcgis\arcexe81\Raster\devices\ntx86\win32_nt

"ECW Image Format" : "RasterFormatsUI" ;
"ECW Image Format".order : 26 ;
"ECW Image Format".user_title : "ECW Format DLL, version 1.0" ;

4) Delete "RasterFormats.cfg" which will be automatically regenerated
   on next execution of ArcGIS 8.1
<snip>

Thanks for the warning John, but it's too late. I tiried the plugin
last week and was forced to re-install Arc/Info 8.0.2. Oh well, no one
said experimentation was safe :-)

Just a warning. Do not try to install the beta with 8.0.2. I did it on
a test machine just to see what would happen. It didn't work and
required a reinstallation of ArcInfo.

Subject: BETA Testing: ECW plug-in for ArcGIS 8.1, v1.0 BETA 1

Hello **********,

Thankyou for your interest in beta testing the ECW plug-in for ArcGIS 8.1.
Note that this plug-in is intended for ArcGIS 8.1, previous versions of
ArcGIS are not supported.

The installation of the plug-in is in the form of a single executable with
filesize under 2MB and is attached to this email:
        NAME:   ECWArcGISPlugin_v1.0_BETA1_11May2001.exe
        VERSION: v1.0 BETA 1

The install directory chosen during installation (eg, C:\Program Files\Earth
Resource Mapping) will contain two example ECW images, Greyscale.ecw and
RGBImage.ecw. These images can be used to test the plug-in. The readme.txt
and Install_Info.txt file in this directory also contain additional
information.

If you have any questions or problems about the plug-in then please email. I
am also interested in any comments or suggestions that you have regarding
the plug-in.

Thanks,
