I have been using IDE-Flash drives, which emulate IDE at the hardware 
level, instead of DOCs, which emulate at the bios level.

DOCs should still be perfectly usable, but you have to go through a lot 
more linux crap than I wanted to to make it the boot device.

What alloy?  Any reason you aren't using plain old 316?
