I have looked at the Al foam for crushable sections, but I suppose it would also make a good bulkhead if you bonded plates of some kind to it. I wouldn't expect it to be all that wonderful by itself, because the whole point of beam-like structures is to have something low density to separate two surfaces that are strong in tension / compression and reduce the bending loads on them.
