It comes in grades as light as 1.5 lbs/cu ft (lighter than styrofoam), and you should be able to put bolts directly through it if you use large washers. We're planning to use it as the base plate for POGO.I have looked at the Al foam for crushable sections, but I suppose it would also make a good bulkhead if you bonded plates of some kind to it. I wouldn't expect it to be all that wonderful by itself, because the whole point of beam-like structures is to have something low density to separate two surfaces that are strong in tension / compression and reduce the bending loads on them.
