This is one of the reasons I was looking at pure helium-3 fusion core: yes, it's "nuclear", but there is absolutely no radioactivity anywhere in the system (at least, no more than background levels that exist anyway), so even the irrational fear is dealt with. Unfortunately, there ain't enough helium-3 on Earth to realistically fuel such a program.
