Some historical and current rockets use such a system. Examples include 
the A4 ("V-2") and the Redstone, and their various descendants (Russian 
"Scud", Korean "Nodong", and some others). 

One gets the impression that much advantage has been taken of the 
fact that the Third Reich no longer exists to enforce its "technology 
export" regulations...
