The W3C treats in-person consensus as only a weak consensus (at least, in most working groups, most of the time). Async consensus is the only one that's worthwhile, because it avoids problems like this, plus allows people more time to think through issues than they might get when put on the spot during a meeting. Note, though, that you can still have consensus *and* strong objections.
