I am afraid :-( I couldn't reproduce this issue. When I build the esb
authenticator jar was in the lib directory. Can you try the build with a
-U property. (i.e. mvn clean install -U)

So it seems as I am missing a runtime dependency to the wso2 commons
authenticator library. I could not find any related lib in my build.
Most likely not the proper fix, but I copied the version from v5 to
web-inf/lib (authenticator-20080422.091935-2.jar).
Now the server starts up.
