Mona,
You remember correctly. I'm not sure if my dad ever saw an Eskie...likely
not, because we would have had them. He loved playful dogs and an Eskie
would have really delighted him.
Anna visited our vet today. She needs a teeth clean and has a yeast
infection in both years. Meds and a visit soon will clear up all issues. The
vet was surprised at her age, thought he would be treating a dog in a
walker, LOL!

Wise man, wise son, but yet we love the others and consider them equal
and honor the ones who are of their care and saving them. With all
the sadness for the abused and ill-bred we never turn down as like
Popeye says and the dogs rightfully feel, "We yam what we yam".

Several years ago I became involved in Keeshond rescue...as a transporter
and friend. One Sunday afternoon I I spotted an e-mail that this group
was going "under cover" to a puppy mill auction to buy the dogs. I dubbed
it "The Great Fargo Raid". Upon arrival, they found no Keeshonden, but
did find 12 Eskies...bought the lot. I advised them that I was full and
could not take in any. at work on Monday I received, via email, "news"
that they had a male for me. What could I do? I accepted and met 3 1/2
year old "Barking Barnyards Fantastic Sam", a snarly fear biter later
that evening. Fortunately, the crate came with him. I placed the crate in
a sheltered outdoor kennel, provided food and water, opened the crate and
fled. Well, I found that replenishing food and water daily did not get me
bit, however attempting communication returned a beautiful set of teeth.
This went on for four days, while the "house Eskies" played in the yard
and got in the house at night. Bedtime on the fourth night had Sam
howling like the dogs from hell. I got up from bed and went to talk to
him. Putting my hand in the kennel got kisses and my allowance to pet
him. I set up a crate for him and we are buddies since, however, he is a
fear biter with new people and will nip.
OH, this is about Anna, but she did not arrive then. As the others found
foster homes, forever homes one remained...Anna Mae. I was contacted and
asked if I would take her. I replied that I would...my first female
Reskie. Well, Anna (9 1/2 years at the time) was the most frightened dog
I have ever seen. Picking her up (after corralling her) had her clinging
for dear life. Petting and cooing for hours did little. She spent her
time in the house under a chest of drawers, eating treats only after I
left the room. Several times she managed to escape the yard and late
night ventures into neighbor's yards are fond memories. One night I was
unable to find her, posted lost and found the next day and flyers in the
neighborhood. Two weeks later she was found in a barn 6 miles (as the
crow flies) away. She was spotted in cow poop, frightened, but a good
bath changed that. The bath gained a bit of confidence, she would take
treats from my hand and if scared, would not run outside, but under the
chest of drawers. Years have past and she is now with us in S. IN. She
just passed 16 years in June. She sometimes "plops" like a puppy to play
when I meet her in the morning and seeks me out for petting. She is still
a bit "hand shy", but obviously has firm confidence in me. I'm guessing
that Anna is slowing prematurely, she produced 45 pups in her 9 1/2
years. Although Sam and Anna were at the same facility, they were
actually brought for the auction from two separate "breeders". Sam has
bonded with Daisy ($15, last on the table, 8 1/2 years then), who came
from a subsequent auction.
After Daisy came Frankie ($.10 to cover paperwork), a scared, one eyed,
18 month old male who finally placed in a loving home. Recent
developments have me thinking about how much cover was involved with the
"undercover" buys. Those sellers were disposing of "used" breeding stock,
knew damn well that rescues would buy them.
Facts: Sam was aggressive, Anna was over age, Daisy too, Frankie was born
with an eye defect. They bet on rescue to buy the old stock for the few
extra bucks of a bullet and the diesel to bury them. Buyer beware, the
millers milk every $.
I would not trade any one of my puppy mill dogs for any $, they are
special and if anyone buys from auction, expect heartache and keeping the
dog as family.
The above is in honor of my lovely Anna who I expect will slip to The
Bridge sooner than if she was not bred so often.
The picture is of Miracle, an example of poor breeding. Miracle has a POC
( piece of crap)heart. Multiple birth defects keep her blood flowing, but
she will not have a normal lifetime.
