JAKARTA (JP): Police raided the home of at least eight activists of the Laskar Jundulah, a radical Islamic group, in Makassar on Friday night and Saturday morning as they expanded their investigation into Thursday night’s bombing attacks, including the one at a McDonald’s outlet. The raids immediately provoked an outcry from the Makassar-based Committee for the Establishment of the Syariah in Indonesia (KPSI), the parent organization of the Laskar Jihad. ”We strongly protest the raids,” KPSI Secretary General Azwar Hasan told a media briefing on Saturday morning.. “We’re outraged and feel insulted by this.” South Sulawesi Police Chief Insp. Gen. Firman Gani however denied separately that the raids were targeted at any particular group. “We’re investigating certain individuals whom we believe may be connected to the bombing,” he said. Police are currently investigating the two bombings that left at least three people dead and 11 others seriously injured. All the casualties were from the blast at McDonald’s outlet on the ground floor of the Ratu Indah shopping mall. Another bomb, which exploded on the backyard of a car dealership on Jl. Urip Sumohardjo, did not lead to any casualty. Police have identified black powder, a kind of low explosives, as the material used in the bombing. The Laskar Jundulah is headed by Agus Dwikarna, an Indonesian citizen who is currently serving time in the Philippines for plotting to carry out bomb attacks there. Azwar held the press conference at Agus’ residence. ”Police have no sufficient evidence to harass our members,” he said. “The raids are a form of terror by the police.” He noted that both the Ratu Indah mall and the car dealership are owned by the local business conglomerate and coordinating minister for people’s welfare Jusuf Kalla, ”Laskar Jundulah would not attack Jusuf Kalla’s property, a respected figure,” he said. |
