Albright tells Indonesian officials to stop predicting violence

WASINGTON (AP) � Secretary of State Madeleine Albright  told Indonesian
officials Thursday to stop predicting that there will be violence if
resident of East Timor vote for independence.
�This is intimidation, or worse. It is unacceptable, �Albright said in a
statement that raised concert about  recent violent while also praising the
Indonesian government for plants to go a heaf with the Aug. 30 vote.
�By allowing this process to go forward, the government of Indonesia has
demonstrated its renewed commitment to democracy- and its determination to
join the ranks of states that resolve disputes by force of law, not force
of arms.� Albright said.
She also praised the 400.000 East Timorese who have registered for a vote
that will decide whether the region will remain part of Indonesia or become
an independent state.
Without citing any specific statements, Albraight warned �Indonesian
officials and anti-independence militia leaders (who) have suggested in
recent days that a vote for independence will result in extensive violence
or even civil war.�
She added: �It is critical, both to ensure a fair vote to preserve the
credibility of Indonesia�s own transition, that Jakarta meet its obligation
to provide a secure environment and promote the disarmament of all
paramilitary forces in East Timor.�
State Department spokesman James Rubin also urged restraint by authorities
in the eastern Indonesian province of Maluku, where 14 people died Thursday
when riot police disbursed rampaging gangs on the outskirts of the
provincial capital, Ambon.
�We deplore the outbreak of rioting, looking and violence.� Rubin said
�While Indonesian is going through a difficult period of hardship and
transition which haas generated tensions, we urge all partis to show
restraint and to refrain from violence.�
Rubin said there were no respont of Americans endangered by the latest
violence.
Meanwhile, 99 House members urged President Clinton to do everything he can
to get Indonesia to �call off the paramilitaries� in East Timor.

The lawmakers wrote the president that if intimidation continues, it will
lead to �an unfair election or election at all � which could lead, in turn,
to yet another bloodbath in East Timor.�
