Habibie President of Indonesia Istana Merdeka Jakarta 10110 INDONESIA Your Excellency, I am approaching you on behalf of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches which includes 217 member churches in 106 countries and links 75 million Reformed Christians WARC has 28 member Churches in Indonesia � One of them being Gereja Protestan Maluku (Protestan Church in the Moluccas). We feel closely related to Christian in Indonesia and to the entire population of your great country. Especially we have been following the recent developments in Ambon with great concern and sorrow. The continuing clashes between the Christian and Muslim Communities represent a threat to the wellbeing and stability of the entire region. We have been informed that certain groups in Indonesia are trying to change the basic principle of the Indonesia nation which is the Pancasila philosophy. It is reported that some Islamic groups have chosen the Moluccas as testing ground to paralyze and deter the Christian community. Dear Mr. President, we have no intention to intervene in the internal affairs of Indonesia. On behalf of a worldwide Christian Community, we wish to draw your attention to the alarming situation in the Moluccas where people are being killed, tortured, discriminated against and persecuted. We appeal to you and your Government to investigated the riots of July 23,1999 and to do everything in your power to restore law and order in Ambon and other places where the clashes between Christians and Muslims have taken places. I wish to assure you that many people around the world pray for the strengthening of democracy and the introduction of peace, stability and social justice in Indonesia.
