Petter, I agree, this cascading error is actually a serious problem because of the exact scenario you reported. I like that inline and command-line overrides have a cascading behaviour, but when it comes to configs loaded from the filesystem, the most appropriate one should be used without cascading to less appropriate ones. Please report your experience in the recently closed #963 <https://github.com/eslint/eslint/issues/963>. Hopefully we can get the issue reopened and get the behaviour changed before 0.7.x.
