thanks for all the hints - i would like to not use X at all, locally
or remote, if possible so i have used the --nogfx option and it works,
sort of.
i seem to have some font issue - as the console appears like below
which is pretty unreadable -
any hints?

It's always worked fine for me through gnome-terminal.
