great, thanks! I'll reconfigure with a hub. also I found a similar xbox question submitted yesterday, leading to an article by Aaron Shimmons showing that xbox uses UDP port 3074. so I can narrow the search.

It's a switched network, so you only see broadcast traffic from other hosts. You'll have to use a hub or some other non-switched network setup. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Steve DeLaney" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Friday, February 06, 2004 1:01 AM Subject: [Ethereal-users] XBOX live packet analyzer? we installed xbox live and I'm trying to use ethereal capture and analyze the network traffic. so far what I'm seeing doesn't seem to account for the amount of activity on the xbox. for those of you not familiar with xbox live, the player is on-line with one or more other players, interacting in the common virtual space of the game. the players continuously talk with the voice headset. the voice quality is very decent, and low latency. what I see on ethereal is intermittent traffic typical of home network, but I expect to see more traffic related to xbox live voice. It might be a simple matter of reconfiguring the network - see comments below. I'm curious if anyone out there has attempted this, or can shed some light on how the xbox live network operates. My home network looks like this: cable modem ^ | v xbox <-> 802.11b game adaptor <-> Linksys 802.11b WAP/nat router <-> wired 10/100 network ^ ^ | | v v voice ethereal headset on and windows game controls the "tap point" for ethereal is my laptop on the wired 10/100 network. Since every packet must pass through the cable modem, I believe this configuration should let me capture packets for xbox. but perhaps the cable modem should be hooked up through a separate 10/100 switch. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- > _______________________________________________ > Ethereal-users mailing list > [EMAIL PROTECTED] > http://www.ethereal.com/mailman/listinfo/ethereal-users > _______________________________________________ Ethereal-users mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.ethereal.com/mailman/listinfo/ethereal-users _______________________________________________ Ethereal-users mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.ethereal.com/mailman/listinfo/ethereal-users
