"Just run". I did not perform any realtime-performance measurements as you 
might expect, but:
I am using EtherCAT to register "events" (changes of state of an digital Input) and timestamping them with an accuracy of <5ms relative to an NTP-Server. I can fulfill this requirement, proven by my measurements (recording and comparing the timestamps of two independent, NTP-synchronized systems receiving the same signal).
