Wouldn't it be much better to just turn ShareWith into a sort of
virtual directory structure that is mounted into the user's folder.
The internal implementation would be the same as what you propose,
but to the user it would look like a special "System" folder that
seems to contain subfolders for preference panels, fonts, sounds,
components etc.
Actually, I agree with Uli, I think it's better to NOT have a special
application for that..
Theses capacities should anyway be accessible from the workspace, and
could be implemented using my "well icon" proposal; after that, well,
it's just a matter of organizing the files ;-) (and here we come back
to the different idea to present files to the user, etc.)
Can you explain the well icon a bit more -- or point me to where it's
been spec'd out on the wiki?
I'm fine with setting up ShareWith as a menu item under Services...
that would work too. Eliminating as much clutter as possible from
people's screens would be good. I've just been thinking about
functional things that would be sexy for demo-ing. :)
I'm also slowly realizing that we really will need folders in the
desktop. Maybe a way around that is a View option in a folder for
seeing it as hierarchical or collapsed -- then you can filter on that
view. That lets people who want folders have them, and it lets people
who either don't or don't want to manage their data see everything in
one spot and filter to find what they're looking for.
