I'm not sure if I completely understand what you mean by 'small
icons' and 'icon bar'. Your ideas seem to resemble the ideas in
Banlu's menubar mockups.

I only talk about the small icons (wireless state, sound volume, date & time).
Currently EtoileMenuServer serves as a place for menus and these icons.
I proposal is to have a icon bar exclusive for these icons
and let the menu be the default GNUstep-style: the vertical menu.

With icon-only menus, I'm usually a bit concerned that one day, I'll
want to use an applications which icons are too bad that I could
understand their meaning without an accompanying text. We shouldn't
forget to include a good possibility to retrieve a description to
these icons. (Do tooltips work on GNUstep with the new version?)

Another thing I'd like to throw in is the positioning of the Etoile
menu. In both the Etoile and the Apple environment, I made the
experience that I needed the application menu bar much more often
than the Apple/Etoile menu. I'd like to move the Etoile menu to the
right or make it accessible from somewhere else, so that the
application menu is in the top right corner. (For aesthetics, we
could have an application logo in the top left edge, like the
standard GNUstep horizontal menu has.)

Does that sound reasonable? What do you think?
