I've just finished modifying Yen-Ju's Busy tool. This monitors windows to find any that are not responding, and sets the busy cursor for them. I have tweaked it now so that it also sets an atom which the compositing manager uses to define an opacity for the window. When windows are busy (i.e. not responding), they now fade (as long as the compositing manager is running). It looks pretty nice, and I think it provides better visual feedback than the beach ball cursor (or equivalent).
