Read the first few chapters of any C book (don't worry too much about the standard library stuff, just the core language). I found the NeXT Objective-C book to be helpful when I was learning: http://www.gnustep.org/resources/documentation/ObjectivCBook.pdf There's a newer version on Apple's web site, but I found the NeXT version much more readable. I still find the Apple version confusing, and I implemented some of the bits of the language that they're talking about... C and Objective-C are both very small languages. Learning the language takes a day or two, learning the frameworks can take years.
