If the moderator has to do it, it sets up the kind of dynamic that generates all those "nazi-this, nazi-that" posts. AND it sucks for the moderator anyway; who would actually *want* to police a bunch of freaks like us? If we try to self-moderate this stuff, we end up at the equally unpleasant respect-the-rules vs. unclench-your-sphincter impasse. Given the distastefulness of such exchanges on the list, and given that etree.org has a stake in its own survival, server filtering may be the "lowest cost" option (taking a broad view of the definition of "cost"). This may be true even though the server filters will neither write nor maintain themselves, and clever freaks will take some amusement in finding new and clever ways around them.
