sorry all,
i should have been more clear.
i was speaking purely "in my experience", and that has been my
experience.
    i have had/do have <...thinking...> 5 cdr-w drives, and they would all
allow me to overburn (though i never tried anything longer than 90min's). i
guess i was just lucky enough to have "kind" firmware on all of those
drives. (must be, right?)
out of all of the units i have, only my 2 computer's, and 1 "boom-box"
style cd player that i have will play anything over 80min., and "everything
i have" is a 5 disc cd changer home unit, 5 disc DVD changer unit, 2 "boom
box" style unit's, 3 "walkman" style unit's, and 3 car unit's (as well as 1
"boom box" style unit at work). most of which are very new-somewhat new (new
= less than a yr. old - somewhat new = 2 yr's old or less).
so i guess the moral of the story is "your mileage may very" ;)
