I believe the short answer if you're burning data (i.e. SHN) CDs is Mode 1.
Check out the CDR FAQ section at:

for some information, although they do indicate it's a "deep topic" and
there are some links to other sections that have more in-depth information.
I did not check those sections out. I use a PC-based burner with CDRWIN, and
it explictly states in the help file: "Note: The MODE2 option is used only
for special applications and is not supported by some recorders.".
