I'm sure there is a more technical difference between the two modes, but I prefer "Mode 1" as it lets my cd-reader spin up to it's full potential (48X) only slowing for difficult to read parts. Mode 2/XA limits the read speed to 8X and also slows on hard to read areas.... Long story short, I can copy shn discs done in Mode 1 to my HD in around two - three mins. and a disc made with Mode 2/XA in ten - fifteen mins.
