Greetings Tim,
>Q.> Do you have to install secure shell or is it already on my machine?
You usually have to install ssh yourself. Ssh includes encryption and due to
the US Governments boneheaded administrative rule known as ITAR, encryption is
considered munitions and can't be legally exported (you can import all you
want however). No Linux distribution is going to limit their market to the US
only by including anything with encryption "on disk". Ssh can be downloaded
from http://www.ssh.fi .
>Q.> Is it similiar to telnet but secure?
Basically, ssh is intended as a replacement for rlogin, rsh, rcp and also
provides secure X11 connections. Later versions also include secure FTP and
(I think) POP3.
There is also a GNU version (LSH) available but I don't know anything about how
well it works.
