Edward,

I suppose some guilds do or did administer tests, but the older guilds
I'm thinking of just either accepted or rejected members based on
their abilities and what they brought to the group.

When you build a small community of craftspeople who know each
other's art and reputation (in the freeware developer sense)... what
need of certification tests? I rather think cert. tests are a symptom,
a somewhat grotesque effect, of the lack of a stronger community of
computerist/artisans. Cert. tests are the impersonal "objective" product
that has filled the void where subjective word-of-mouth and letters
of recommendation once served.

So, I hope nobody minds if I continue to think of ELUG as a guild ;-)

I kind of winced when I found out Red Hat was starting their certification
program...
