Steven,

All I know is that I had to download their software which is about 8.5 MB
and I
invoke their SW which controls the dial up to their local number. Perhaps,
they
can monitor my Web activity. I guess the agreement that I accepted has some
detail about what info they gather and what they do with it.

I assume that if they support Linux, their SW would be used for dial up
instead of
the standard PPP package of a particular Linux distribution.

When I initially sign on, they display some "for sale" links. Maybe, this is
one of their revenue sources.

If you have the time, perhaps you could test drive this ISP and take a
closer look at the end user licensing agreement.

If the isp is offering a no-strings (or banners) attached standard tcp-ip
type connection (like most isp's other than AOL offer) then the only thing
you might need on your linux machine is a ppp dialer which you already
have in linux. Standard browsers like Netscape work on top of that layer.

Without ads, where are they getting the revenue to give the service away?
Maybe you become an automatic spam target, or they sell your demographic
data, or their software automatically sets their portal as the default
home
  page...?
