Okay. I called Clipper and got the lowdown. I was operating on assumptions that were valid six months ago. USWest is quite vocal about how they hard limit is the 10,000 feet from the Central Office - I even called them and they said my phone line could not support more than 256k. However I guess Clipper is partnering with a "CLAX", Competitive Local Access Carrier or something, which leases the lines from USWest and upgrades them with all sorts of equipment. Evidently this means that even with me being 10,000 feet away, right on the fringe, within a few weeks I might even qualify for a 1-Meg connection. It also means that even the outlying regions of Eugene might be able to get DSL. I've been wanting to buy a house somewhere south of 28th or elsewhere in the hills, but I've desisted because I wanted that high-speed connection. :-) Now I guess I can start looking. Good news all around. The guy I talked to at Clipper is named "Alan" - he's going to get back to me next week about how much I can upgrade. yeehaw.
