Nope, default is 'observer'  you have to have some sort of credential
to start posting articles.  Diaries you can do regardless.

Agreed.  didn't mean 'elite' in a bad sense... more like only people who
have some real experience can post, unlike the slashdot experience of 
Natalie Portman first posting about her hot grits beowolf cluster.  (ie. 
Slashdot has gotten very full of junk)
