You shouldn't have to compile a kernel just to make a floppy firewall.
The Coyote project is based on the "Linux Router Project," which is an
excellent modular single-floppy router. I don't know what Coyote Linux
is supposed to provide that LRP doesn't already include?? It says on the
Coyote website that the "configuration and maintenance" is improved on
Coyote Linux, but the free version configuration looks the same as LRP.
I'd go with the LRP distribution, it seems to work great, and it's up to date.
The LRP distribution comes with a kernel compiled w/o coprocessor emulation,
however, there are compiled kernels available at their ftp server that
include emulation, which will work on any pc that has 8megs of ram.
If you're doing a dialup, I'd check out the contributed module for ddiald
which includes chat & pppd, as I recall, from Trevor Marshall of BYTE.
