The way I read Linus' words /usr/src/linux is fine as a directory.
What he didn't seem to like was the symlink of that name.

In any case it is hard to take seriously any words condemning
the use of /usr/src/linux when that is exactly the directory
that Linus himself creates the kernel source tar files for.
