Well I've finially got a brand new shiny kernel installed. :-)
I want to thank everyone who offered suggestions. I still have no idea
why I wasn't getting any modules the first couple of times I tried to
compile. The only logical thing I can come up with is I might have
accidentally hit the "exit without saving" button on make xconfig. I can
see doing this once, but multiple times in a row? >:-S
