I think GUI development is one area that's going to really grow in the next 6 months. KDE's releasing v2, and GNOME is transforming into Helix. Add to that the fact that there are really good minimal wm's out there, and life is looking good. I've always said that one of the strengths of any *nix is that it's modular--If you don't want it, don't install it. Also, my wife can have her "little footie print" and I can have a console.
