sound card in Debian / ALSA ?

I've been missing sound since switching to Debian.  Is there a sound
conifig program?  Or do I have to compile the kernel to support my sound
card.  I have a soundblaster 16. 
 
I've read that ALSA will do what oss does but it's open source.  What deb
files would I need to get ALSA working?
