You have 2 choices: the kernel sound, which works fine.  Use sndconfig
to configure it.

alsa-conf or alsaconf  there are a few alsa programs/packages you install

Both work.  Depends on what card you have, which is better.  For instance,
I have an i810 and the alsa is great, the kernel driver sucks.

Most common cards, I'd use the kernel first.... use Alsa for stuff
unsupported by the kernel.
