Dave,
Your config files are in /etc/X11, the main config file is /etc/X11/XF86Config.
Beware though, that some X distributions prior to 4.0.1 also puts config files in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11. You may have a symlink from one XF86Config file to the other.
Check it out with ls -l, or ls -F. With -F symlinks will have a @ appended to the end
of the filename.
With Mandrake, you should have a program called Xconfigurator. Try typing X<tab><tab>
to see what programs are available. Be sure to use a capital X. You can also do a
lowercase x, but you'll get more programs. xf86config might be on your system as
well, but this program is a little more difficult to use.
Also look in /var/log/ Look for files such as XFree86.0.log, or xdm.log. These might
have some error messages that you aren't seeing.
If you still have trouble, try posting your log files and hardware specs, and
XF86Config.
One other thing, you say Mandrake 7. Which one. 7.1 and prior uses XFree86 3.3.6,
while 7.2 uses Xfree86 4.0.1. Big difference between the two.
