For the original question.....
If you don't have the Linux release of Q3....install the Q3 demo
package from a FULL Mandrake set. Then, if memory serves me,
replace the .pak wads in /usr/local/games/q3demo with the ones
on Q3A CD #1.
There's a readme and a few pointers along with the Q3Demo.
