Try dpkg --pending --configure a couple of times and see what packages
are problem children. At a very minimum, it will tell you what's broke.
Remember what they are, and then work with that.
A couple of times are needed because:
#dpkg --pending --configure
package snarfus requires package whatzit, but package whatzit is not
installed.
installing package whatzit.
package snarfus failed.
#dpkg --pending --configure
installing package snarfus.
installation complete.
This usually happens when you upgrade a large quantity of packages at
one time.
Speaking of dselect, there's been a thread on one of the Debian lists
that goes like this: "Dselect is evil"
