Thursday's meeting January 11, 2001
At the user's group, there were about 20 people.

There were 4 computers being worked on.

Seth told me how fast it was getting a ISO image using Prozilla with Cable.

Stacey brought a 486 from spare parts and let Neil install Slackware. It was
fun watching Seth cringe. Neil had this big grin on his face.

There was someone there for the 2nd time trying to learn more about what Linux
can do. He is going to implement a Linux solution to his work environment.
There was a couple of us who gave him lots of good information. He went away
with a couple of distributions. We pointed him to our Linux homepage.
http://www.euglug.com I belive that we have euglug.org and euglug.net.

Since the new Kernel was out there was a lot of discussions on compiling your
Kernel. Jamie was pretty good at explaining why and what you do when you
compile your Kernel. I compiled my Kernel just the day before with printer and
bttv support. It worked great.

Dave is working on learning Linux from the ground up. He is working on "Linux from
Scratch."

There is more information on "Linux from Scratch" on this site.

or there are more printable pages at

I just read "Who Would Want To Read This Book" and it made sense.
If you see him there, ask him about it.

Ron had his dual Celeron machine in. He got a new case and probably compiled
his Kernel to have fun. If you want to know how to compile your Kernel he's
only done it near 50 times.

Ken was in with his machine learning a little more about linux. We pointed out
where to find things on his box.

In the other room they were trying to get X up. I don't know if they ever
succeded. If it wouldn't work I'd try a new video card. Linux is worth it.

There was a discussion on ASCII TV. I know I want to try it out. Stacey said
he was going to try it. For those of you who picked up a terminal, if you
have a TV tuner card you can try this too. http://n00n.free.fr/aatv/ I want
to get it working and bring in my box so all of you can enjoy aatv. I thought
it would be great to have aatv going and have a friend over. I could just
imagine their reaction.

There are still some dumb terminals left. I did some moving around the
terminals to make more room. We'll have to do another clean up sometime this
spring.

It seems like energy is being brought up at the last couple of meetings. Since
energy does power our computers, it's on everyone's mind. We talked about
low tech things like conservation, wind and other nonconvential means of
electric production.

Stan was gone when I got there. Seth did say he got his Kupps going for Stan
because it was misconfigured. Seth said you can administer Kupps by using a
browser. Try http://localhost:631
Seth said it has a lot of configuration stuff for kupps.

Bob brought in this little computer the size of a keyboard. Very nice!!!!

Joe was asking if there was some Linux Video Confrencing programs. Any one
know one or tried one?

I came a little late. I stoped at Staples on the way and I met a guy who's
used the kernel since 1.0. He even used Plan 9. I told him about the group.
Hopefully he'll stop in.

I'll see you at the meeting.

Tim
