Potato is stable, Woody is still unstable (testing/unstable).

Get potato.  All  you need are the bootup disks.  During install, tell it to add some 
ftp/http sources to your apt sources list.  It will look for newer files than your 
media (if using cdrom) and download them.

After installation, look at your /etc/apt/sources.list file.  If you see any potatoes, 
change them to stable.

Then run:
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade


However if you want x4, you'll need to use woody.  Instead of stable, use the word 
testing.
