Thursday February 1, 2000 There were about 15 people. There were about 3 computers being worked on. Chris Allen brought a friend new to computers. His friend had a laptop. Ron and a couple others tried to install a couple of distributions. His system had problems with pcmcia cards. I believe there was a concensous that it was a hardware problem and not linux. Seth and a couple of others who are good at installing linux on laptops weren't there at the the time. I brought my system in to get some help with my net card. It worked fine under windows but I needed help with the linux driver compiling. Neil helped me. He installed a link to the linux source and then it compiled fine. It recognized the card but it wouldn't connect to the net. I had to fire up windows. Jamie let me know where I was at LINUX meeting. This the fun part why I had windows going. I hid my head in shame. Earlier Ralph helped me install Cygwin or Cygnus on my windows side. Ralph called it subversion from within. I thought it was great that you could run the bash shell from within windows. I guess there are no permission problems since it's running in windows and everything is root in windows. I demonstrated Demo Linux for a couple of people who haven't seen it. Steve was in and was working on his laptop on getting his pcmcia card going. We even tried Demo Linux but to no avail. He had one card which wouldn't work. We talked about having another Demo Day. Last week Seth said he'd like to see a steering committee start working on this. Let's start to work on this. I think it would be a good opertunity for us to take advantage of the 2.4 Kernel popularity and let's use IBM. Maybe we can get them involved. We can make it more oriented to business solutions. Anyone interested? Write me and we can start some planning, brainstorming. We have been missing some people who show up pretty regular. I know it's winter and some of you are pretty busy with school or work. I'd like to talk about planning this. So If you come lets talk about getting this going. I know I brought planning a Demo Day and everyone wanted to do it. I hope to see most of you at the meeting. Tim
