You can try.  The onboard hardware (video, sound, and modem) 
should theoretically run linux.  But....

I worked on one recently, reinstalling windoze for one of my 
coworkers.  The BIOS is a piece of sh*t, and won't let you do 
anything.  The motherboard is *very* proprietary.  For instance, 
IRQs and I/O for sound is reserverd on the board, and can't be 
disabled.  There also seems to be some flakiness (and arguments) 
between the ISA and PCI slots, however, Compaq has no 
documentation about this.  

However, the IDE controller drivers, etc., were all included in 
Windoze 98, so you might give it a try.  My Toshiba laptop was, 
according to the manufacturer, not compatible with OpenBSD.  But 
it didn't know it and happily ran it as the sole OS, at least until the 
motherboard died :-(
