So hunting around various list-archives has been my best help;
Gosh just hard to know where to begin... Well I can now mount
it, from /dev/sr1 as it turns out. After recovering my system
and getting the hdc=ide-scsi msg through but not seeing it do
anything, I modprobe'd ide-scsi and wow, it said sr1
but wait, I didn't _have_ any /dev/sr*
so MAKEDEV etc, phew it seems to work so far;
I gotta give it a rest but did read something disturbing on a
list-arch post a while ago (some redhat list)...
the claim was that a burner _needs_ to be the master of the ide
interface -- I'm more familiar with real scsi, does this mean
my generic 586 box, which I think has the std 2 ide ports,
has _2_ masters (the first on each port), while the 'slave'
is the 2nd drive on each port?
(ie, 'the ports are called primary/secondary, but the
      chaining therein denotes master/slave??')

thanx all
 gnite'y and happy beer to ya
