For your first questions I haven't a clue.
Your second question, I found a good page to do a kernel the Debian way. I
followed the instructions and recompiled my kernel numerous times.

Yes it's a newbie page but it was well thought out. If you follow the
instructions you should have a custom kernel built in no time. Let me know
what you think.
Your Third question, I'm not sure if MetroX would fit what you need or not. I
know they have a debian package. I had it installed for a short time. I'm
thinking about trying it again to support 2 monitors. Well actually I could
get three or more going with MetroX. I think the limit is 16 monitors. I
think you would have to have dual head Video cards.
