How about loading an 8290 driver first.
Go to a virtual terminal and type
insmod 8290
insmod ne2k-pci
Also try 8390 instead if that doesn't work; and try
modprobe ne2k-pci
Also try the same with just 'ne'.
If those don't work, report your messages.
