We live in age where laws are conflicting reality, and yes, sometimes you are breaking the law in giving someone something that would be perfectly legal to hand them a copy of otherwise. Make a VCR tape of a movie off HBO, and you can legally share it with your friends. Take that smae movie, record it digitally, and they won't let you send it to your friends..
