/dev/cdrom is often really a symlink to the actual cdrom device. If that's the case for your distribution, you need to check the rights for the device that /dev/cdrom links (probably something like /dev/hdc). It may turn out that to use the real device you'll need to add yourself to a special group (e.g. group cdrom). If that's the case, after adding yourself to the group, you'll need to completely log out, and log back in to be recognized as being in the group.
