You know what would be cool? A page on euglug.org where we could
record some of the stuff people in Eugene are doing with free
software. Kind of a local free software references page.
Companies I can think of off the top of my head:
Willamette.net
B&H Engineers
EFN
U of O (probably many stories here at various departments)
Petersen Arne
ORCAS
PremiereLink
It'd be good to have a brief description of what the organization
does, how many people it has, what services they're running on BSD or
Linux, and a spicy quote from someone at the company -- "I used to
spend 12 hours a week rebooting our Exchange server. Now that we run
our mail on Linux, I never have to touch it." Emphasis more on
reliability and time/cost savings than on freeness.
Example (note, this is fiction, sorry, Tim):
"BSD Unix gives me time to focus on B&H's future needs."
-- Tim Howe, B&H Engineers
B&H Engineers is one of Lane County's leading engineering
services companies. B&H employs 50 engineers, draftspeople,
and clerical workers between its downtown offices and two
field offices in Blachly and Oak Ridge. In the last two
years, network administrator Tim Howe has migrated most of the
company's services, from email to backups to advanced finite
element simulations, to a mix of BSD and Linux PCs. Tim's
migration strategy? He targets the proprietary system that
causes him the most pain. "No pain, no gain," quips Tim.
Then we'd have a place to point people when they say "Who uses Linux
in this town, and what do they use it for?"
Any interest?
